Chapter 16
Joe Mason had once been a bodyguard and a driver, jobs heâd taken serious for much of his adult life. In actuality, they often assigned him with protecting people in prominent places when he wasnât driving them around. In time, he found better-paying work, chiefly to eliminate the exact people heâd once protected. And one by one, heâd killed many of them, earning every one of his sins. Doing so had secured his place here, alongside evil by pure chance, having defeated the powerful creature who once ruled this realm. In doing so, Joe had unwittingly crowned himself as the next guardian to this domain.
Heâd also changed his name to Darrius for the same reason many of the beings who roamed this world did, because of the overwhelming guilt they felt for their earthly crimes. Even after having relived so many of his sins, the guilt never went away, never lessened. The shame continued to eat away at him. It was part of him, now and forevermore.
He saw a woman drifting by, her hood down, heading away from him.
âYou, there,â Darrius said.
The woman looked his way. âM⦠Me?â
âYes. Where do you think youâre going?â
âI was justââ
Darrius didnât let her get out another word. He launched himself off of his throne and landed at her feet, standing over her. Her robe acted defensively, twisting around his hands and ankles, cinching tight. It wasnât the first time heâd been in this predicament. Darrius yanked his right fist back and punched her in the face. Then he elbowed her in the neck and backhanded her shoulders. She fell to the ground where she cowered, and they both froze, digesting whatever sins he had crushed with the blow.
Even while they reviewed her misdeeds, all he could think about was her punishment. When they finished with these sins, heâd send her back to the pit where she belonged. If she didnât go willingly, he would feast on the whole of her transgressions and be through with her. They would cast her out of his realm, to a far worse realm. That was what made him good at his job, his intolerance, and how swiftly he handed down punishment. He didnât need to be smart when he could scare the crap out of them.
He finished eating her sins and felt himself grow a little larger from it, a little smarter. âNow go!â
The woman fled to the pit as expected, displaying nothing but fear and obedience, and that was the way Darrius liked it. Everything in order and everyone in their place.
Returning to his platform, he stood among the many jagged rocks and beheld the well of souls. The woman went to the edge of the pit, hesitated, then leaped in.
âThatâs right, little piggy.â
The pool accepted her, pulling her down instantly into the swirl of writhing, bloodied bodies. Within the electric heat, men and women and creatures alike allowed their bodies to take and give freely. Agony and gratification, it was all the same in this cesspool.
